Solar panels are mounted either in a fixed or tracking state wherever it is mounted. A fixed mount is cost efficient, but it has the disadvantage of not being able to fully take advantage of the sun’s rays since the angle of the sun moves depending on the time of day and the time of year.
Whereas, a tracking mount moves with the sun. The array’s angle changes with the sun’s movement, taking full advantage of the sun’s heat.
Power meter or utility meter
This is a requirement if the homes with a solar panel system are connected to a utility grid. The meter measures the power derived from the grid, as well as the power the system gives back to the grid.
For homes not connected to the grid, a pack of solar batteries is used to store unused electricity generated during the day to be used at night when the sun sets.
How a Solar Energy System Works
A solar panel or photovoltaic panel is made up of solar modules which are the backbone of a solar panel. A module is in turn made up of interconnected solar cells. The effectiveness of a module will depend on the number of solar cells it contains, which vary from module to module.
A single module produces limited electricity. Solar panels are therefore made up of multiple interconnected modules to produce the desired output.
When photons or particles of sunlight hit the cells in a solar panel, these cells convert the photons into electrons or direct current of electricity (DC), The electric current then discharges from the solar panel to the inverter where it is converted from DC to AC or alternating current, the kind of power needed to operate household appliances.
Solar batteries act as the storage system of a solar panel system. These batteries have their own inverter that converts DC power to AC power. When solar panels generate more electricity than is needed, the surplus energy charges the battery.
